Numerical Exploration of Dynamic Behavior of Ornstein-uhlenbeck Processes via Ehrenfest Process Approximation

Abstract Recently Ornstein-Uhlenbeck (O-U) processes have been drawing much attention in financial engineering for modeling stochastic behavior of spot interest rates. While transition probabilities of the O-U processes are readily accessible, it is numerically cumbersome to quantify their dynamic behavior much needed in certain applications, e.g., computing the prices of barrier options and th...

Stochastic accumulation by cortical columns may explain the scalar property of multistable perception.

The timing of certain mental events is thought to reflect random walks performed by underlying neural dynamics. One class of such events--stochastic reversals of multistable perceptions--exhibits a unique scalar property: even though timing densities vary widely, higher moments stay in particular proportions to the mean. We show that stochastic accumulation of activity in a finite number of ide...

Bounds on Mixing Times in the Bernoulli-Laplace Diffusion Model - Elementary proofs for variation distance and first passage times

The Bernoulli-Laplace model describes a diffusion process of two types of particles. To analyze the finite-size dynamics of this process, we apply a generating function method for diagonalizing the corresponding transition matrix. The method is a generalization of the generating function approach of Mark Kac [1] to diagonalize the Ehrenfest model. We then apply this solution to provide elementa...

Mean unknotting times of random knots and embeddings

We study mean unknotting times of knots and knot embeddings by crossing reversals, in a problem motivated by DNA entanglement. Using selfavoiding polygons (SAPs) and self-avoiding polygon trails (SAPTs) we prove that the mean unknotting time grows exponentially in the length of the SAPT and at least exponentially with the length of the SAP. The proof uses Kesten’s pattern theorem, together with...

Time-dependent density functional theory based Ehrenfest dynamics.

Time-dependent density functional theory based Ehrenfest dynamics with atom-centered basis functions is developed in present work. The equation of motion for electrons is formulated in terms of first-order reduced density matrix and an additional term arises due to the time-dependence of basis functions through their dependence on nuclear coordinates. This time-dependence of basis functions tog...
